Information for First-Year Students: First Steps
Congratulations on your admission to the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Vilnius University (VU). An exciting period lies ahead for admitted students—the beginning of their studies. Prospective students often ask where to find accurate information about their studies and what to expect during the first weeks. Below are the key steps to help you successfully prepare for the new academic year.
Schedule of Classes and Exams
MIF course timetable
How to find the exam schedule?
Open the MIF timetable:
- You will find records of compulsory and elective subject exams by going to the usual way every week until May-June or December-January, just as you check lectures and exercises/seminars.
- In the dark cherry-colored menu bar at the top, select "Assessments", set the filters (select your study program, course, group), and the schedule of compulsory and elective subject exams will open on one page, except for the dates of individual studies and research papers assignments.
If you are studying under an individual study plan
Open the general VU schedule website :
- Select the faculty where the subject studied individually is taught.
- Select the name of the lecturer and go to May-June or December-January in the usual way, just as you would check lectures and exercises/seminars.
If you do not see the exam dates in the schedule yet, you can check the virtual learning course for the subject or ask the lecturer.
Where can I find the deadlines for research paper assignments (coursework, professional internship reports, etc.)?
- In the Virtual Learning Environment, log in to the relevant course.
- On the MIF website > Studies > Master studies > select your study program > Scheduled Assessments.
Academic Calendar
Here you will find the most important dates for the academic year: the start and end of semesters, exam sessions, holidays, and other academic deadlines. Academic calendar is a handy guide for planning your studies and activities throughout the year.
Quality Of Studies
Study quality depends on every member of the Vilnius University community:
- The student – studies with motivation, takes an active interest in their studies, inquires about study opportunities, expresses their opinions and suggestions, and, upon noticing violations, submits complaints to the Dispute Resolution Commission or the Academic Ethics Commission.
- The lecturer – takes responsible care of the study process, introduces students to assessment and examination procedures, etc.
- The Student Representation – represents, defends, and supports students’ interests related to study quality in the Faculty and University councils, study programme committees, and other bodies.
- The Study Programme Committee – ensures the quality of the content of each study program, strives to ensure that the program’s objectives remain relevant and achievable and that the program remains competitive, while taking into account the views and needs of interested parties and incorporating best practices.
- The Study Office – organizes and administers the study process efficiently and with high quality.
- Faculty and University Authorities – ensures the resources necessary for studies, prepares Faculty activity plans, and is responsible for the coherence of processes across different groups.
More information about study quality can be found here.
Study Program Committee
The Study Program Committee is the body responsible for coordinating the study program(s) and overseeing their implementation.
The objective of the Study Program Committee is to ensure the relevance and achievement of the study program’s goals, as well as the competitiveness of the study program, by reconciling the views of interested parties, their needs, and best practices.

You should order a certificate in advance via your eStudent account. You can take the certificate on the next business day after ordering at the MIF Study Office, room 106 (Naugarduko St. 24), or receive it by email.
IMPORTANT! Please indicate in the notes if:
- you would like to receive the certificate by email;
- additional information needs to be included in the certificate (e.g., exam dates), in which case please provide the exam dates for all subjects in the notes.
Elective courses
When does registration for elective courses take place?
- Registration for spring semester elective courses – during the first week of December.
- Registration for autumn semester elective courses – during the first week of May.
- For first-year master’s students, registration for first-semester elective courses takes place during the first two weeks of the semester.
More specific dates are listed in the Vilnius University academic calendar.
How do I register for an elective course?
You must register for an elective course (hereinafter – EC) in the VU information system, in the “EC registration” section. If the system does not display available options, although they should appear according to your study plan, contact the study office by email at
Who should I contact if I missed the registration deadline for an EC?
If you did not register for an EC within the assigned time, you can still register during the additional registration period in the VU information system – the first two weeks of the new semester in which the EC is taught.
If more than two weeks have passed since the start of the semester and you have not registered, contact the MIF Study Office as soon as possible by email at
What should I do if I cannot register for an EC because all places are filled? Can I register if the lecturer agrees?
If the quota is full, you should register for another EC that still has available places. At the beginning of the semester, some places usually become available, so you may be able to re-register.
Permission from the course lecturer does not grant the right to register for a course that has already reached its quota. Quotas are determined based on Faculty resources and teaching workload, and can only be changed by agreement of the Vice-Dean for studies, institute directors, and study programme committees.
Can I retake a different EC than the one I failed?
Yes, you may choose another EC from the same elective group in your study programme, provided that the student quota for your chosen course is not full.
Complete the course retake request form in the VU information system by the specified deadline, indicating the EC you are choosing and which EC you wish to replace.
Can I choose an EC from another study programme?
It is possible, but this requires creating an individual study plan. In the VU information system, you must submit a request for an individual study plan, indicate the course you wish to take, which course it would replace, and provide a reason for the change.
The individual study plan must be approved by the study programme committee and the Vice-Dean for Studies.
Can I choose more ECs (more credits than specified in the study programme)?
Yes, but this can only be done by signing a free listener agreement or by creating an individual study plan and paying for the additional courses.
