Ask a MASTER student!

Do you think about master's studies at the VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics? Not sure which study program to choose? Ask a question to a master's student and learn more about studies!

Because the undergraduate studies in Econometrics were interesting and rewarding, I wanted to continue learning new things that I could apply in my professional career. Therefore, I chose the study program of Modeling and Data Analysis, branch of Econometrics (now - Data Science). Master’s studies are also a kind of personal challenge. The challenge is also to learn to combine work, study, and personal life, develop the skill and habit of continuous improvement and do so in a way that makes learning effective and rewarding.

I graduated from the bachelor of econometrics programme, and I have learned a lot during my four years of study, both in professional knowledge and life experience from VU MIF as a community. Therefore, to delve even deeper into the world of data and shape my career in this field, I decided to continue my studies and study the Modelling and Data Analytics programme (Data Science). I knew that at VU MIF, I would receive quality knowledge from lecturers who are professionals in their field and who strive to transfer that knowledge to students in a clear and focused way. I also knew that I would always get help from the faculty and the university community whenever I needed it.

After graduating, I started working in data analytics and was looking to deepen my knowledge. The Master in Modeling and Data Analysis (now Data Science) meets all my expectations - interesting lectures, group projects, and practical assignments. I also like the opportunity to study part-time. This is very useful in combining studies with work.

While studying abroad, I realized that I was attracted to logic, improving the quality of code, finding the best solutions to solve a specific real-world problem with the help of IT methodology. I started working in this field, and I was interested in it. After graduating, I knew exactly that I would study the software systems study programm, and I had no regrets about my decision. New architectural knowledge helps to perform your work in a more versatile way. Quality work = happy customers. This is the most important thing for a programmer.

I chose this area of the master’s program because it provides a broad range of theoretical and practical knowledge. Studying offers many opportunities in the IT job - you can become not only a programmer, systems analyst but also a project manager. The nature of the studies is also favorable - one selected thesis must be written throughout the year. By choosing an interesting field of work, you can do a lot and learn a lot in a few years. The knowledge acquired during the studies is valuable, and the opportunity to carry out research work or improve the method further motivates to achieve the set goals.

When I started working in IT, I saw that a number of things I learned during my bachelor's degree in software systems had to be put into practice. Seeing these benefits, I decided to extend my studies and pursue a master’s degree in the same field of study. During my master's studies, I learned more about the program development process and architectural solutions and broadened my horizons with technologies I had no experience yet. I believe these things will help me pursue further career goals.

I chose to study for a Master's degree because I wanted to continue my studies, develop further and deepen my knowledge of topics I was already familiar with, or explore areas that I hadn't studied in my previous studies. I also wanted to explore the field I had analysed in my bachelor thesis. I decided to go back to Informatics because I found the subjects taught in this study programme the most exciting and valuable. The lecturers are already familiar - I know they are experts in their field. With a good theoretical background (especially if you have studied IT during your undergraduate studies), a Master's degree doesn't seem scary anymore. Still, the willingness to learn and improve your skills is essential.

Statement of Lithuanian Higher Education Institutions on the Military Actions of the Russian Federation against the Independent State of Ukraine

2022 02 25 VU vartai380x250The Lithuanian University Conference strongly condemns the military actions of the Russian Federation against the independent state of Ukraine. Furthermore, Lithuanian universities show solidarity with Ukrainian universities, their staff, lecturers, students, and the entire Ukrainian nation.

We are ready to use all available resources at this challenging time to help Ukrainian universities. We will also help Ukrainians who come to seek asylum in Lithuania, allowing them to continue their studies or research and settle in Lithuania for a shorter or longer period.

Again, these events demonstrate the importance of building an educated, democratic, critical society. Our shared responsibility is to develop a young generation that loves and protects its country together.

Universities are one of the most critical institutions in helping the state build a strong fabric of society. The solidarity and shared tradition of universities in such hours unite all those who believe in European values, democracy, freedom of speech, and thought.

Arqus opens the Twinning call 2021/2022

2021 12 14 Argus380x250Arqus Twinning aims to strengthen the subject-related collaboration of staff and students and create possibilities to carry out joint learning and teaching activities through piloting short-term mobility schemes with a priority in Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) and STEM disciplines.

Twinning is perceived as the mobility of a team, consisting of 1 teacher and 3-6 students, moving to another partner institution within the same subject area. The length of the visit is 3-5 days (+2 additional days for travel).

Twinning activities may vary in mode and type. They may include internships, group trips, participation in international contests, joint workshops, summer schools, group projects, etc. Twinning activities might be implemented through regular (physical) or blended Twinning activities.

Examples of possible Twinning activities:

  • 6 students of sociology and their teacher from Bergen travel to Granada for 5 days to have workshops with their counterparts and compare societal interactions in different countries.
  • Students of a business administration programme in Vilnius are working virtually on a common practical project together with students from Leipzig (blended Twinning activity). At the end of the project, the teacher from Vilnius travels to Leipzig for 3 days with 6 students to complete and present the results of the project to a business company.

Read here an interview with Leyre Morgado, a student of the Master’s Programme in Archaeology at the University of Granada that completed a Twinning stay at the University of Padua.

Funding:

The Alliance has agreed on general financial terms upon which the calculations of travel and subsistence costs are made. The maximum project funded grant may be awarded for a group consisting of 1 teacher and up to 6 students:

  • Travel costs: 400 EUR per person.
  • Individual support: 120 EUR per day, covering the whole duration of the visit (3-5 days+2 additional days for travel).

Application deadlines and procedures:

Academics can apply for Twinning activities by filling in this application.

  • The call is open from 13th December 2021 to 1st February 2022.
  • Start of period eligible for Twinning visits: March 2022.
  • End of period eligible for Twinning visits: end of September 2022.

Selection criteria:

  • Applications in Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) and STEM disciplines are prioritised. Applications from other disciplines will be considered too.
  • Sustainability of the action (prior joint activities with host university and/or further and follow-up activities after the Twinning); the benefit of the activities to sending and receiving institutions.
  • Innovativeness of the proposed activity and impact for Arqus development.

Grant notification will be provided to applicants by 28th February 2022. If your application is approved, funding is earmarked for use until the end of September of 2022. Postponing the activity after this period is not possible. After the visit, applicants need to report on the final results of their Twinning visit compared to the aims stated in the application.
