An internship is a key part of the study programme, allowing students to gain valuable practical experience in a real work environment. During the internship, students apply and develop in a practical activity their knowledge, competencies and abilities. The student intern is supervised by the sending Faculty supervisor and receiving organisation‘s Internship Coordinator. This form of internship offers the opportunity to develop students‘ theoretical knowledge with career-related experiences.

Typically, preparation for the internship in the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics begins 4 months before the start of the internship. Various organisations are invited to submit internship offers in the Internship system and students are informed about the start of the internship period and other important details.

Internship types

The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics has two types of Internship:

  • Professional Internship: student develops the general knowledge, competences and abilities gained in the study programme, and apply them in the field by implementing practical professional activities.
  • Educational Practice: student becomes acquainted with the practice of the speciality in a company or other place of practice, develops skills, deepens the theoretical knowledge required for further studies.

Professional Internship is planned for the following programmes in the Faculty:

Educational Practice in the 7th semester (fall) is planned for the students of the study programme „Information Systems Engineering “.

Internships period and workload per week are set by the Study Programme Committee. Follow the programme information for the specific details about the internship in each study programme.

If a student wants to do the internship at Lithuanian company, she/he should:

  • apply for placement of internship at organisations from the list at Internships system, or find the placement of internship by himself;
  • receive the agreement from the teacher to supervise the practice and agree on the topic and main learning objectives of this internship.
  • after being accepted at the company for an internship, fill and confirm the internship contract in the Internship system;
  • after obtaining confirmation from receiving organisation‘s Internship Coordinator at the system, print 3 copies of Internship contract;
  • sign all three copies and obtain signatures of sending Faculty supervisors and director of the receiving organisation.
  • bring all 3 copies of the contract to Studies Office till due date;
  • after it is being announced that contract is signed by the Dean, come to Studies Office and get back 2 copies of the contract (one for the student, another one for the receiving organisation).

If a student wants to have an internship at Vilnius University, he should:

  • receive the acceptance letter from the director or head of the department of Vilnius University, where the student would like to do the internship;
  • receive the agreement from the teacher to supervise the practice and agree on the topic and main learning objectives of this internship.
  • before the beginning of the internship, provide this information by e-mail:
    • students name, surname, study programme;
    • name of the internship department;
    • internship supervisor’s names (it could be one person);
    • the topic of the internship;
    • main tasks of the internship;
  • sign the commitment of confidentiality in the Internship system and bring it to the Studies Office;
  • sign the commandment, obtain signatures of supervisor and director or head of the department of VU and bring the final document to the Studies Office.

Completing the internship:

During the internship, the period student solves planned tasks, apply his knowledge to practical situations and write an internship report.  Regarding questions related to the internship, she/he should consult with the supervisor at the Faculty or Coordinator at the receiving organization.  At the end of the internship, the student has to write a final report about his internship and defend it during the defence session.

Group practice (smart practice) – is the internship, when the group of students from different departments of Vilnius University are solving multidiscipline tasks. More information here. This practice can be credited as a professional internship.

Voluntary practice – is a type of practice, which is not directly related to studies and professional skills. It cannot be credited as a compulsory professional internship in the study programme.
