Implementing MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) at Vilnius University is progressing well. Currently, 60.5% of all users (staff and students) authenticate via MFA to access the university’s information systems.

From Thursday, 28 November, at 12:00 noon, MFA authentication will become mandatory for all employees and students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics.

This means that, without MFA activation, users can no longer log in to VU information systems.

Why is this important?

  • This measure is essential to protect our entire organisation from potential cyber-attacks. A password alone is no longer a sufficient means of protection.
  • With MFA in place, even if someone were to hijack a user's username and password, it would not be possible to log in to an account or access VU’s information resource without an additional authentication step.
  • All user's accounts will be secured with a second factor as soon as the Microsoft Authenticator app is installed.
  • MFA authentication will only be required four times a year, provided there are no changes to the underlying technical environment, such as a work computer or mobile device.

What can you do today?

  1. Download and activate the Microsoft Authenticator app from Google Play or the App Store and activate it.
  2. Authenticate to the VU system according to the instructions provided (click here for instructions).
  3. If you have any questions, please get in touch with the IT helpdesk at pagalba@vu.lt, use the help robot at pagalba.vu.lt, or call 6200.

  • Additionally, for those with special needs (e.g., visual impairments), biometric authentication, such as fingerprint scanning, works well.
