A graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Assoc. Prof. Petkevičius defended his doctoral dissertation in informatics in 2020. Titled "Numerical and Symbolic Modelling of Reaction–Diffusion Processes in Bioreactors", the dissertation focused on advanced methods for simulating complex biochemical processes.
He brings to the role over a decade of research experience spanning artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep neural networks with scholarly work encompassing the development of methods and algorithms across a broad range of domains, including outlier detection, computer vision, natural language processing, medical image analysis, and quantum algorithm optimisation.
Assoc. Prof. Petkevičius’s research has been published in leading international journals, including Autonomous Robots, Applied Artificial Intelligence, the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, and IEEE Access. He also serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Q1 international journal Nonlinear Analysis: Modelling and Control.
In addition to research activities, Assoc. Prof. Petkevičius teaches courses in Deep Learning Methods and Introduction to Quantum Computing. He is actively engaged in the broader artificial intelligence community as President and co-founder of the Lithuanian Artificial Intelligence Association and as a Board Member of the European AI Forum, a consortium of European artificial intelligence associations.
The development plan he has proposed for the Institute for 2026–2029 is guided by three core principles: fostering a strong and inclusive academic community, establishing a clear long-term vision and strategic direction, and ensuring excellence in both research and teaching.
Under Assoc. Prof. Petkevičius’s leadership, the Institute aims to contribute actively to the implementation of Vilnius University’s strategic objectives, Lithuania’s national artificial intelligence strategy, and the European Commission’s RAISE initiative. Particular emphasis will be placed on strengthening student engagement in research from the early stages of study, advancing doctoral programmes, increasing participation in top-tier international journals and conferences, promoting artificial intelligence literacy within both the University and Lithuanian society, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and attracting leading researchers through national and European funding instruments, including Horizon Europe and ERASMUS+.
