Connecting to a Linux graphical environment

  1. Make sure you have a MIF e-Account: your MIF e-Identity
  2. Download ( Putty download page) and run the Putty application
  3. Enter your settings in the opened window:
    1. in the 'Host Name (or IP address)' field enter the address 'uosis.mif.vu.lt'.
  4. In the category box, expand the 'SSH' column and select 'Tunnels':
    1. In the 'Source port' field, enter the port number 5555 (or another number of your choice if you can't connect in step 6);
    2. In the 'Destination' field, enter the address linux:3389 (it is important to enter this address accurately);
    3. Click the 'Add' button;
    4. Click the 'Open' button.
  5. In the opened CLI window:
    1. after 'login as:', type the MIF user name (for students, the first two letters of the first name and two letters of the last name + number) and press 'Enter'.
    2. after 'Password:' type the password and press 'Enter'.
    3. NOTE. Do not close this window while you are using a remote connection to the Linux servers. After you close this window, the tunnel to the MIF network closes also.
  6. Initiating an RDP connection:
    1. Start the 'Remote desktop connection' application (it is always available on Windows operating systems; Linux users can use any other RDP client).
    2. Specify the computer and the port localhost:5555 (the one that you entered in step 4.a).
    3. Click 'Connect'.
  7. Connecting to a remote Linux server:
    1. In the appeared window enter your MIF credentials.
    2. Click on the 'OK' button.
