Catalog description:
Data compression, transform coding, data encoding,
graphics file formats.

Goals:
The student should learn the transform coding concept;
the most popular sound and image data compression algorithms.
He also should show practical ability to work with compressed
graphics files as, BMP, TIFF, PCX, GIF, JPEG, MPEG, JBIG.
Content:
- Data transforms. Discrete Fourier, Cosines
and wavelet transforms
- Data quantization. Binary, high resolution,
uniform, vector, adaptive.
- Data encoding. Run-Length, Huffman, arithmetic.}
- Compression. Lempel-Ziv-Welch, fractal and
compression in BMP, TIFF, PCX, GIF, JPEG, JBIG
graphics files.
Required Background:
Course of mathematical analysis, linear algebra,
probability theory, programming.
