Abstract:
 
Developing and deploying a scalable prediction platform is a very challenging task that many big data practitioners are
struggling with. The holy grail of data science/prediction infrastructure is to train the prediction models in real time as
the data is collected and streamed into the data center, and serving the prediction results in an on-demand fashion via a
service.
 
In this talk the speaker will go through a set of online machine learning tools that if used appropriately can be scaled to
work on truly massive datasets with of billions or tens of billions of rows flowing through the system daily.
The talk will cover dimentionality reduction, clustering and prediction using both simple tools such as linear regression
as well as more advanced tools such as Markov Chains.

At Infare Solutions this framework is developed to be used on a massively multivariate time series, collecting a
billion+ new observations daily, as support tool for the airline Revenue Management systems.

Vilniaus universitetas 438-ąjį gimtadienį pasitinka su nauja tradicija

Šiemet Vilniaus universitetas (VU) 438-ąjį gimtadienį švęs dvi dienas – balandžio 3 ir 4 d. Išskirtiniu akcentu taps Atminties diplomų teikimo ceremonija. Ji rengiama pirmą kartą ir tikslingai siejama su universiteto įsteigimo paminėjimu.

„Švenčiant dar vienus universiteto gyvavimo metus norisi pakviesti dviem dalykams: kad gausi ir įvairi mūsų bendruomenė susitiktų bendrystei ir kad vis iš naujo prisimintumėme bei vieni kitiems perduotumėme universiteto istoriją. Šiemet atverčiame jautrų, skaudų, mažai įsisąmonintą universiteto istorijos puslapį. Refleksijos procesas mūsų bendruomenėje, prasidedantis kartu su „Grįžtančios atminties“ iniciatyva, išties labai džiugina“, – kviesdama į gimtadienio renginius sako bendruomenės reikalų prorektorė dr. Birutė Švedaitė-Sakalauskė.

Balandžio 3 d. nuo 10 iki 19 val. VU bibliotekos P. Smuglevičiaus salėje visuomenei bus eksponuojamas pirmosios lietuviškos knygos – Martyno Mažvydo „Katekizmo“ originalas. Lankytojams bus pristatyta ir šio reikšmingo leidinio originali kopija – faksimilė. Ją trejus metus kūrė Kamilė Kalibataitė. Aukštos kokybės faksimilės požymiai – į originalą panaši popieriaus faktūra, pergamento nelygumai, netolygus siuvimas, laiko padaryti įtrūkimai.

Tą pačią dieną 15 val. Mažojoje auloje vyks iškilminga Atminties diplomų teikimo ceremonija įgyvendinant iniciatyvą„Grįžtanti atmintis – Recovering Memory“. Pagrindinis jos tikslas – įvertinti totalitarinių režimų poveikį VU bendruomenei, identifikuoti nukentėjusius asmenis, išreikšti jiems pagarbą. Iniciatyva tampa stipriu akstinu geriau pažinti ir įvertinti VU istoriją, užpildyti ar net perrašyti kai kuriuos jos puslapius. Tikimasi, kad tai taps universiteto tradicija. Renginys bus tiesiogiai transliuojamas VU paskyroje „Facebooke“.

Balandžio 4 d. VU bendruomenė kviečiama į gimtadienio pikniką – bendrus pietus įvairiose universiteto vietose. Prie vaišių gausinimo galės prisidėti kiekvienas bendruomenės narys toje VU dalyje, kur jam tądien pietauti patogiausia:

  • 11–12.00 val. Kauno fakulteto Liepų kiemelyje,
  • 12–13.00 val. VU senųjų rūmų Didžiajame kieme,
  • 12–13.00 val. Čiurlionio miestelyje,
  • 12–13.00 val. Botanikos sode,

7th BSUIR Open Programming Contest

The 7th BSUIR Open Programming Championship will be held from March 31 till April 28, 2017 (Minsk, Belarus). Undergraduates and postgraduates of BSUIR, students of other educational institutions, students from other universities and countries are invited to participate in the Championship.

The competition will take place in three rounds:

  • first qualifying round (distance, problems in russian) — March 31 - April 3;
  • second qualifying round (distance/onsite semi-final, russian and english problems) — April 6;
  • Championship final (onsite, only english problems) — April 26-28.

First qualifying round is required only for BSUIR and high school teams but other registered teams can also take part in it. Second qualifying round is required for all teams; BSUIR and high school teams from Minsk take part onsite, other teams — distance.

To participate in the Championship teams need to be registered prior to 04.04.2017 incl (prior to 02.04.2017 for BSUIR and high school teams). Participation is free of charge — have fun.

The finalists are 42 teams, showed the best results in the qualifying rounds, but no more than:

  • 7 teams of undergraduates and postgraduates of BSUIR;
  • 5 school teams (one team from each of the educational institution);
  • 2 teams from each of the university of Belarus and near and far abroad.

Open BSUIR Programming Championship is held by the ACM rules. During the Championship, the teams will be given 5 hours to solve 8 to 12 programming problems. The problems are written in English.

There is good news for foreign teams who are participating in the final. Belarus introduced a visa-free entry procedure for up to 5 days at the entrance to the National Airport Minsk for citizens of 80 countries. Steven Goldfarb about his lecture on CERN and the LHC

Where do we come from? Where are we going? What are we made of? Are 
there any rules behind all of this? These are the questions that have 
driven human advancement for millions of years. And we are still seeking 
solutions, today. I will discuss how the experiments at the Large Hadron 
Collider at CERN are giving some answers and, more importantly, more 
questions.

The explosion of data availability and requirements for data analytics 
techniques is a well-known trend of recent years. Scientific computing 
is no different with an exponential grow of data volumes in recent years.

Generic cloud storage solutions can reach several limitations when 
dealing with large amount of data. These limitations will be presented 
and several effective approaches will be discussed to address solutions 
for storing of large amount of data, to ensure the accessibility by a 
large scientific community, to analyze it, and finally, to ensure its 
long term preservation.

About the speakers

/Steven Goldfarb is a physicist from the University of Melbourne (link 
is external), working on the ATLAS Experiment at CERN. He is active in 
education and outreach, webmaster for the ATLAS public web pages, 
co-chair of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group, on-site 
coordinator of the REU Summer Student and Research Semester Abroad 
programs for American undergraduates at CERN, and advisory board member 
for Quarknet. In his spare time, Steve fronts the Canettes Blues Band, 
the group behind the ATLAS Boogie./

the storage group ensuring a coherent set of services storage, data 
preservation and analysis for the worldwide physics community. He is
