Technical resources
The technical resources of Digital Science and Computing Centre include resources of the Open Access Centre of Santara Valley (supercomputer complex), virtual computing laboratory resources, and the previously acquired high performance cluster complex of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Vilnius University. Over 1500 computing cores and more than 600 TB of disk space are available for users. In comparing to computing facilities of EU organisations and universities, the DiSCC supercomputer has hybrid cloud architecture with the following exclusive components: the core specialised computing nodes system, application acceleration module, symmetric multiprocessor computing system, communications and low-latency networks, high density storage subsystem, monitoring and management subsystem. This kind of architecture allows to use the advantages of both distributed computing and symmetric multiprocessor computing subsystems. High performance file system LustreTM is used for the management of system data. Grid nodes are interconnected by grid middleware and specialised resource management software ensures the efficient resource management.
In the near future, at least three different technological platforms for cloud computing will be installed, with the help of DiSCC partners BAIP, and presented for business and state institutions. IBM CloudBurst, Microsoft and OpenNebula solutions based on various virtualisation technologies are expected to be provided. We hope that this kind of a platform will not only allow deciding on the most suitable technology of infrastructure as a service but it will also help to prepare for a smooth process of migration to the cloud based infrastructure.
